Refine them, no need to take them out.

I'm not a user of tricks, but they definitely should stay.

I don't mind tricks - but I'm not a fan of the link-feints system.

It's still there (but animation almost unnoticeable nowadays). R2 makes your player take more controlled touches on the ball. Try pressing it all the time and you'll see.

Im not surprised people who play pes dont realise what R2 dribbling or shooting does. Mates of mine who play PES against me often ask me, how do you do that?? I basically always reply with R2 every time!! They have the games themselves and have played the series for years but never knew how to dribble or shoot using the R2 modifier.

Somebody posted a video a few pages ago of PES 6 curlers and placed shots done by using the R2 button and it shows the variety of shots in you could pull off. Over the years they have dissapeared. Now you can only pull off proper curlers with certain players with the right stats. Players like Rooney can get massive bend on a shot but other players dont seem to have the ability to even try a curler. All players should be able to attempt it, but stats should decide how succesful they are at it

Haha same here, i think it was PES 5 that properly nailed the R2 shooting, although i maybe wrong it might have been earlier. The problem is if nobody tells you, how do you find out? Konami need to spell it out a bit more. FIFA games have a spoken tutorial on how to do those kind of things which is great if youve never played the game before or arent familiar with the controls as it can open up other possibilities in the game which gives you much more variety in play

R2 gives an extra layer of quality to one's own game. Always ( since I can remember) used it and couldn't really "live" without it. I use it much more than R1. Pretty much every time I trap the ball I use it (not consciously though). I could live without R1 (if they removed it for some weird reason). Not without R2.

I'm pretty sure I learned it (and mastered) on some Piggyback guide (which had the "official" label on it) back in PES 4 or 5 :D

@pes4life im the same with R2. I use it pretty much everytime i trap the ball and then everytime i dribble. This new touch feature adam has hinted at is very intriguing. ive always said PES could do with a way of taking a first touch. Kind of like the right stick feature on FIFA where the ball comes towards your player and you flick the right stick to push the ball in a certain direction and distance depending on how hard and long you move the stick

Yep. Me too. It allows for low speed turns with incredible low radii (useful to "fool" opponents blasting towards you at full speed). It also allows much better close control (always "handy", er... "footy"? :D )
Also intrigued by Adam's hint about touch. Eagerly awaiting more details...

Peace

going back to the R2 thing, i only just realised the other day that if you tap R1 after you have pressed to shoot, your shot will be hit harder, a kind of driven type effort. The problem is though there is a slight delay in the shot meaning you need plenty of space to pull it off. But when you do you can get some decent looking shots rather than the dodgy floater efforts we have all come to hate

It used to work really well in PES 2011, in PES 2012 these shots get blocked way too often.

I have been enjoying my plays of PES2012 of late. My persistence after hitting a brick wall with the game around Dec/Jan appears to be paying off. Had some fantastic encounters against Top Player AI and have rarely - if ever - felt cheated. A mixture of dedicated off ball defence, further improvement in my passing and dribbling play which I thought had peaked and controller re-map making the game great fun to play.

Here is a solid example how I would love to be able to catch defenders on the wrong foot in PES. Alexis Sanchez goal against Getafe. One turn gave him two steps of space in front of a defender and voila, goal.
