Huh? i love 2012 step overs. Nice and responsive and you don't have to go diagonal. You can keep running straight, cancel out of them, shoot, pass, or stop. What more can you add?

@greyfoxmgs there's no way R2 stepovers were more responsive and they're restricted. Firstly, you always had to slow down for them to start quickly which is ridiculous for players like ronaldo and secondly, because its restricted to 1 button, you can't choose which foot to do the step over with. It will always start with their weaker foot.

Also makes multiple stepovers clunky as it takes ages to re-register the input.

What I wanted was not the multiply stepover using R1x2 or is it L1 anyway, it is the R2X2 step over which is quick and it only do one step over and u can fake your opponent and change direction immediately. This step over is avaliable through out the series until 2011. In PES 2012 the step over is slow and doesn't allow quick input, maybe I suck at it, but I feel the freedom is not there.

I don't know why they have this stupid new auto step over, upper body fake thing when u slow down/ in stationary position/ or while holding R2 when u get close to player??? I mean the game seems like built for People to pick up easily but I feel they should have this option to turn on and off, especially the side step feint. Let us have full control of any tricks we want or have 2 system with full manual tricks system and easy tricks control. Of course with this implemented, u need lobby filter system online if not people will just exploit it

@greyfox i see what you mean. I personally find it very responsive. But the R2 stepover you're talking about only happens with the players strongest foot. I want the choice.

What? i wasn't defending link feints, i hate them. Was saying i don't want to go back to r2 stepovers, all about right stick.
Have to disagree with your statement on step overs, since link feints we're introduced (why oh why konami) practically any player can perform a hard trick on the pitch (indviduality anyone?) It is so inane and un-resposnsive. In my humble opinion you can't beat the old system it was so responsive & intuitive and took a while to master with the right analogue stick tricks, I never had any problem with correct foot in pes of old all this rubbish is leink feints is fluff for the FIFA boys.

Now we have some automated bull shit system meaning anyone can perform a trick without the need of practice in training mode, for me that is one of the detah knolls for PES's hardcore fans and another reason many seasoned PES players are sick to death at what a automarted mess the series has become.

What angers me is that they even incorporated the best penalty kick system on any footie game ever in 2011, but nooooooooooo beacuse the usual cry babies could not take 30 minutes out of their day to learn and master a fully manual PK system it was scrapped, and for what another load of noob friendly auto PK rubbish. Konami need to have a vision for the hardcore and stick to it, why create a exteremely rewarding and fully manual PK system and then scrap it 'cos people find it hard.

So you took the time out to master the one and only true fully manual penalty system on any footie game ever and you use the word awful?? I just don't get that, I mean I can understand if you didn't like it, but pretty much every person I know on forums or local agrees that once mastered it is perfect. Surely you could appreciate it and not like it, but to say its awful it's such a sweeping comment it makes no sense to me as a gamer.
Once it clicked for me I never wanted to see the return of generic noob friendly auto PK's again, it was people on here and pesfan crying there eyes out saying it's 'rubbish, crap, blah blah blah' some even claimed to have spent time mastering it, but once asked to explain you could tell they we're just saying that, especially as the new system would be mastered by two chimpanzee's in about 20 minutes, where's the skill in the new system it's awful  .

How would you say that the new penalty system is more rewarding or exciting or cathartic or more immersive than 2011's, would you say it resonates woth you more because it's like FIFA? Or are you intent on playing devils advocate today ;)

sorry mate crossed wires big time, I was thinking what are yout alking about as I have read you asking for link feints to be removed...agreed about full right stick control for tricks, fully manual and would stop my noobie pes mates hammering the stick from box to box...I miss the old days of using the right analogue to wow people, the old standing chip up volley was immense, hold down push up and woila an easy trick to teach your noobie mate.

No mate, not playing the devil's advocate at all. I thought the system was painful. I didn't enjoy it at all. Just my opinion. I think others must have shared the opinion too as Konami went back to the behind the player view, so I can't be that unbalanced.

What the same Konami who completely cocked up MLO due to feedback, the same Konami who try to please everybody with quick easy fixes, but still yet to address scripting, mess up shooting and turn passing into a mess... C'mon mate, even you got to admit that's a weak view, they should have stuck with 2011's pen system and had the vision and cajones to say to the fans "deal with it, we have created a masterpiece for footie games" thats the problem and why PES is in the sorry state it is today.

2011 was far from a masterpiece. The issues that PES has now has nothing to do with too much feedback or because people are "cry babies" as you put it. It probably has to do with with a number of issues such as financial restraints, natural disasters, lack of talent on the team maybe, lack of attention to detail, Konami's slow start this generation adapting to next-gen consoles, poor organization... who knows. Definitely not the fault of fan feedback though.

personally i think it's good there are so many ways to pull off tricks, and indeed so many.
perhaps it's not so good they're aren't properly detailed in the manual.
and a classic controller option would be great.. L1 for step overs etc.
...and konami have definatly toned down the capabilities of players...
i'd be gutted if they changed the link feint options, it's the one big improvment over the past few years that's been implemented (eventually) well.
this is an area where pes was lagging behind fifa badly..

i'd also like to suggest just how good pes12 is.. compared with previous versions.
of course it still has gameplay issues but on the whole it's really quite impressive.
really enjoying it at the mo...
hopefully with adams help they can tweak it to be ps3s pes6...
i'd just like more options, like pes6 had compared to 5, not less...

Good post. Gives an insight into maybe why PES has been so impotent in recent years. Nothing to do with "too much" fan feedback like some would have you believe

Yep. Great shout, nobleknight. I had this impression already but I've never, ever, seen this put so bluntly. And from an insider nonetheless (which makes him knowledgeable in what he speaks). Explains a lot.

Guys, I'm going to be teasing b@stard, but you'll be without me most of next week as I'm demoing our biggest Ubisoft titles at press and retail events until around Thursday. So I'll be off from this post until then.

So anyway, PES 2013 is shaping up really REALLY nicely. I'll be honest, I have this reserved approach to it all, because its very different to what it was supposed to be. I need to snap out of it, because I'm unintentionally underselling it, and perhaps making your expectations lower naturally.

Now some of you might welcome this approach, but overall it's kind of like refereeing against a player who jumps around a lot who goes down under a clear challenge for a penalty. Predetermined judgement can impact your quality of officiating. Hopefully you get what I'm trying to say.

So anyway, PES 2013 answers so much of what we wanted, plus that little bit extra. Keepers :) Shooting :) Passing :). Adjustments to a magnitude of different gameplay elements has created a fantastic experience, so much so I'm finding it hard not to start expecting a high quality football game. Think realistic player control, new attributes created to factor in defensive ability and ball control.

Hell even the animations. Now I'm not talking about FIFA levels of overall movement and presentation, but I am talking another bump up in quality from PES 2012. Think a silly variety of individuality in this respect, too.

And, along with this, some massive breakthroughs in correcting various issues within game modes that have hindered the potential. Yes, very cryptic, but right now I have to be.

With me being away, the podcast is up in the air for next week. Suff and Alan could potentially do something, but I'm thinking a week out, and then lets hit big the week after with hints and much more.

So have a good week, and we'll get talking as soon as I'm back.

Speak soon.

It's about time we got attributes for defensive abilities. About time!
