Is this the end of the d-pad?

Postby thanvar » Fri Jun 05, 2009 4:05 am

Hello to all of you guys here in the forum.
Well for my whole e-footballing (PES and FIFA) life I have been using the D-pad.
Even with the amazing FIFA 09 on the PS3, the Direction pad was the only choice, not just for me but for my closest friends with whom I play with for over 20 years, because we could not get comfortable playing footie games with the analog stick after so many years. We actually had to bear that every single advantage called for us was NEVER given as this is a glitch that has not been addressed yet by the FIFA 09 devs concerning the gamers who use the d-pad.
When I heard the news about FIFA 10 I was ecstatic for all the improvements (especially the ones in the Manager Mode) but I started feeling like an old geezer when they mentioned the amazing 360 degrees of dribbling. I realised that FIFA 10 was being built upon the left analog stick. Well I see that they are obviously right to do that but the big question for me is:

Is there gonna be an option (like in FIFA 09) for gamers who want to play with the d-pad instead of the analog stick on FIFA 10?

And if yes,

What are the disadvantages for those players concerning the gameplay?

Hopefully I am not the only one in this forum who still plays with the old trustworthy d-pad....am I? :)

god ... you are a dinosaur! haha kidding but seriously dude you gotta get up to date with the analog stick! i take it you dont use manual passing or shooting because i think it would be impossible with the D-pad and now with 360 degree dribbling you wont be able to use it because the D pad one lets you move the conventional 8 ways that 09 lets you.

You gotta get with the times man

Next gen gaming was always going to move on and the d-pad is kind of a last gen method of control, I think that EA have decided to move on and I for one am looking forward to the freedom that more movement will allow us

I play with the d-pad, only for football games. But with the new 360 movement then i'm going to start playing 09 from now with the analogue to start getting used to it :)

That's a good idea. Once I got used to the analog sticks, mainly from many hours of SSX, I wasn't able to go back to the d-pad. I'm all about options but it looks as though EA are leaving the d-pad behind as far as control goes.

Welcome to the forums btw.

Like i said to Adam in the podcast i was on with him, i used to be an avid D-Pad user but since playing Fifa 08 and 09 a massive amount, im now more of a analog player as to me it just feels alot better and movement feels alot less rigid as such to me.

I still have no problems using the D-Pad but if i had to choose, i would use the analog.

Exactly the same situation here, and with a few people I know actually. PES forces you to use the D-pad, it's never been quite as accurate using the analog stick (which is weird). But the control you get in FIFA using the analog stick is far better.

Spot on Chris.

The analog just feels perfect for football games and due to its responsiveness, it feels just right. With the 360 dribbling being implemented in Fifa 10, the analog is going to go from strength to strength i feel.

I hope this is the end of the d-pad. Who would want to voluntarily use 8-way movement when you can have 360 degree? I hope EA take the plunge and don't even make d-pad control an option. It's the only way of forcing people to move on.

The D-Pad died for me when Microsoft put the Analog in a great position on thier controllers. I even use the Analog on the DS now also even in it's strange position.

Hi again guys. Just got back from some weekend vacation.
Although I need to thank you for posting your opinions unfortunately my questions on the first post haven't been answered :(

I will re-post them just in case Suff or anyone else from the FSB team answers them.

Is there gonna be an option (like in FIFA 09) for gamers who want to play with the d-pad instead of the analog stick on FIFA 10?

And if yes,

What are the disadvantages for those players concerning the gameplay?

In answer to your first question I really doubt it

If they do implement it though you will not get the freedom of those who play with the stick, simple as that

Thanks for your quick reply xCW. I would not mind having the freedom of movement that everyone else has but at the same time I am considering other people that aren't able of using the stick. I have a close friend who suffers from cerebral palsy and is not able to use the stick but until now he was able to play the game, even with the limits of the d-pad.
It is very suffering for me as his friend to see that he won't be able to even play the game from now on. It is a very important matter for myself as well as he is like a brother to me and I want to continue playing FIFA with him.
Anyway if at one point there is a sure answer I'd love to know. Thanks again.

I'm an avid d-pad user as well. Coming from PES, I am so used to playing with it and could never enjoy the analog sticks. I suppose it will feel more natural dribbling with the analog with the new mechanics and it may ease my transition but for FIFA 09 the d-pad is the only way to play for me. I might add that my online win ratio is 85% after around 80 matches or so, therefore I'm not pants either with it either.

I think personally that yes this is the decline of the d-pad. 360 movement on the d-pad will be hard to pull I think and the only way to be effective is to use the analog stick.

At the end of the day you'll just have to force yourself to play with the analogue stick no matter how long it takes. You will eventually get the hang of it and wonder how you used the d-pad for so long ;)

You not alone brother, am avid D-pad user, never felt comfortable playing with analogue and would be extremely pissed if they take that option off FIFA 10. ( I cant see it happening)

As much as it would be good to have both D-Pad and analog control to keep both sides happy (Adam im looking at you! :D), i just cant see why EA would add it for Fifa 10 myself. Maybe im wrong and we will have confirmation for sure when Suff finds out from the EA dev team but i really cant see it.
