Yes a lot of the songs are terrible or not to your taste but If you don't like their music because they were on the X Factor then in my eyes you're a music snob.. (not that you are)

I should probably stop, it's going to make me a very unpopular figure on these forums :)

I don't see why. We can shoot the breeze and argue the toss surely? I won't take offence. Its all about opinions and tastes of course.

I don't like Cowell thats all. The music acts are harmless at the end of the day. I just feel that some genuine talent would never be accepted to the later stages of a show like the X-Factor. Why does the winner always fall into that particular category of ballad singer / pop warbler? It gives the impression to the watching audience that that particular category of music is the only "valid" form of music that brings success and every other genre is somehow an oddity.

Yep definitely too many same-y acts but not many other types of music audition, only recently has 'rap' begun to show in these shows. I think there has been 1 or 2 rock acts in the past 3 years and both got to the live shows but obviously not enough votes.

I'm all up for a debate and like others opinions but some people (not on this forum) take it as me trying to tell you what to think.

This is exactly why I love this forum. One doesn't have to agree (statistically, the probability of disagreeing is far greater than the probability of agreeing). But one should respect all opinions and use them as starting point to grow and improve one self. Ultimately, that is why I visit/contribute (little as I can).

This is the only forum I contribute to as well. Its as passionate as any other fan site on the web, but there's a lot more tolerance and respect on here than most places. The foundation for all of us being here is PES. That is a great starting point for sure.

Good insight. PES seems to be a wonderful plateau/reference from where other subjects/themes can be discussed in a sustainable/humane way...

One more point for PES... :)

Anyone else getting the feeling the media is skirting around this issue of Liam Fox and his "friend"? ;)

Its as plain as day what the relationship is but I guess the press don't want to be accused of being homophobic by forcing out an MP.

British racing driver Dan Wheldon has been killed in a crash during an IndyCar race in Las Vegas.

Wheldon, winner of the Indianapolis 500 in May, died after his car was sent airborne and clipped the catch fencing during a 15-car pile-up.

It sent several cars flying through the air and others spinning on fire down the track.

I saw the crash just after it happened. Horrible :(

http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2011/10/hard-drive-space-salt/ wrote:Researchers in Singapore have discovered a way to bump up hard disk storage capacity to six times current figures, and all it takes is a pinch of sodium chloride — also known as chemical grade table salt.

Here’s how hard drives work at the moment. The spinning magnetic platters are covered in randomly distributed nanoscopic grains. These work in disorganized clumps of tens to form one bit of data. The latest drive models hold up to 500 gigabits of data to every square inch.

A new take on the idea, headlined by Joel Yang of Singapore’s Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE), ditches the idea of inefficient patternless clumps and instead make slightly larger grains (ten nanometers, up from seven to eight nanometers), in regular patterns, which each store one bit.

“It’s like packing your clothes in your suitcase when you travel,” a spokesperson for IMRE said. “The neater you pack them the more you can carry.”

The secret is salt. An e-beam lithography process produces fine nano-scale structures for the discs, but when Yang added sodium chloride to the developer solution he found that he could produce nanostructures with a much higher resolution: down to 4.5 nanometers half pitch, without prohibitively expensive equipment.

This method allows data to be stored at significantly higher capacities: 1.9 terabits per square inch have been demonstrated, and a capacity of 3.3 terabits per square inch is possible.

This six-fold increase would mean that a terabyte hard drive could, in the future, hold six terabytes of data on the same size platter

Commanders for Libya's transitional authorities say they have captured ousted leader Col Muammar Gaddafi.

The reports came after transitional forces claimed control of Sirte, Col Gaddafi's birthplace, following weeks of fierce fighting.

Some unconfirmed reports say Col Gaddafi has been wounded, others that he has been killed.

The colonel was toppled in August after 42 years in power. The International Criminal Court is seeking his arrest.

"He's captured. He's wounded in both legs," National Transitional Council (NTC) official Abdel Majid told Reuters news agency.

"He's been taken away by ambulance."

AFP news agency quoted another NTC official, Mohamed Leith, as saying that Col Gaddafi had been captured in Sirte and was "seriously wounded" but still breathing.

A soldier who says he captured Muammar Gaddafi told the BBC the colonel had shouted: "Don't shoot!"

But NTC official Abdel Majid Mlegta told Reuters news agency that the former leader had been shot in the head and killed as he tried to flee.

The BBC's Caroline Hawley in Tripoli says ships and cars have been sounding their horns in the capital and guns are being fired in celebration.

Earlier, NTC commanders in Sirte - about 360km (220 miles) east of Tripoli - said the city had been liberated.

"There are no Gaddafi forces any more," Col Yunus al-Abdali told Reuters. "We are now chasing his fighters who are trying to run away."

There was no confirmation from the NTC leadership.

But fighters in Sirte celebrated by firing in the air, and chanting "Allah akbar" ("God is great").

Interim government forces had been facing heavy resistance from snipers in the city, and used heavy artillery during its offensive. Thousands of civilians have fled.

The NTC has also suffered heavy casualties in the town of Bani Walid, south-east of Tripoli, in recent weeks.

On Monday the NTC said it had captured 90% of the town, including the centre.

Football was being played in medieval Scotland, research reveals wrote:
A Scottish historian has discovered that the game of football was being played as early as the 15th century, and that by the 16th century organized games were taking place just outside castles throughout Scotland. Scottish Football Museum curator Richard McBrearty has found several records relating to the game in the archives of the National Library of Scotland.

He discovered a manuscript of accounts from King James IV of Scotland that showed he paid two shillings for a bag of ‘fut ballis’ on 11 April, 1497. More evidence came with we came across several diary accounts of football being played in places like Stirling Castle, Edzell Castle and Carlisle Castle. The games were played on pitches smaller than the current regular football field, and featured between 10 and 20 men on each side.

Mr McBrearty said, “It is research I have been involved with for about 10 years. We have been looking at the origins in Scotland and how it was played. We have been looking at small closed games that were played and evidence of structure and skill. We found fragments of information which show that there has been an evolution of the game which goes back hundreds of years.”

One important piece of evidence was the diary of nobleman Sir Francis Knollis, who was ordered by Queen Elizabeth I to hold Queen Mary of Scots under house arrest in Carlisle when she fled Scotland after being forced to abdicate. The diary includes an account of a game played for the Scottish monarch in 1568, which involved 20 players and lasted two hours. The game played on a field that was 50 metres long with trees planted at either end used as goal posts.

This helps to explain why in the 1970s workers in Stirling Castle discovered a round object hidden behind the thick oak-panelled walls of the bedchamber used by Mary, Queen of Scots. The leather ball, which has been dated to 1540, is considered the world’s oldest football.

Another account of early football comes from the diary of Robert Bowes, England’s ambassador to the Scottish court in the early 1580s . He writes, “Some quarrel happened the other day between Bothwell and the Master of Marischal (George keith) upon a stroke given at football on Bothwell’s leg by the Master. After that the master had before received a sore fall by Bothwell.” The ambassador added that it almost led to a duel between to the two men, but that when King James VI heard of the dispute he put a stop to it.

Historians have believed that a football-like game was played throughout the British Isles for hundreds of years, but that it was unorganized and lacking proper rules. The first written set of rules for the game was made in 1848 by professors at the University of Cambridge.

But McBrearty says this new evidence points to a new origins for the game: ”The accounts of small football matches in the grounds of castles suggest the game, in its current form, is much older than officially documented. It appears football was more of an evolution than a 19th century revolution. There are enough examples to make a case for the game being invented much earlier.”

Italian rider Marco Simoncelli has died after a horrific crash at the Malaysian MotoGP in Sepang.

The race was stopped on lap two when Simoncelli's bike veered across the track at turn 11 into the path of Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi.

The 24-year-old had his helmet knocked off and was hit by both other riders.

American rider Edwards also fell and dislocated his shoulder - while Simoncelli's fellow Italian Rossi was able to return to the pits.

Simoncelli lay motionless on the track after the impact, while the race was immediately red-flagged.

At first officials were looking to restart the race before the extent of Simoncelli's injuries became clear.

The race was cancelled amid confusion in the grandstand, with fans throwing bottles to show their initial displeasure.

The death is the first fatality in MotoGP since Japan's Daijiro Katoh died from injuries sustained at the 2003 Japanese GP while, last year, Japan's Shoya Tomizawa died in a similar crash to Simoncelli in a Moto2 race in San Marino.

Simoncelli's death comes a week after British IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon was killed in Las Vegas following a crash.

BBC MotoGP presenter Matt Roberts said: "Marco lost his helmet in the crash. The officials said that, when the track medics got to him, he was in cardiac arrest. They tried to resuscitate him in the ambulance and the medical centre.

"Both riders collided with him and the impact corresponded to him losing his helmet. The saddest thing is that Valentino [Rossi] and Marco were very close friends.

"Colin [Edwards] has a dislocated shoulder and is in a lot of pain. He and Valentino are absolutely devastated."

A MotoGP statement read: "On Sunday, 23 October, during the MotoGP race at the Sepang International Circuit, San Carlo Honda Gresini's Italian rider Marco Simoncelli suffered a serious accident wherein he sustained critical injuries.

"The race was stopped immediately with the red flag and Simoncelli was transported by ambulance to the circuit medical centre where the medical staff worked to resuscitate him.

"Despite their efforts, Marco sadly succumbed to his injuries at 4.56pm local time [0956 BST].

"Everybody involved in MotoGP extends its deepest condolences to Marco's family, friends and team at this tragic loss."

And Sepang circuit chairman Mokhzani Mahathir added: "This is a one-of-a-kind freak incident where the helmet came off and I am sure FIM [International Federation of Motorcycling] and MotoGP will be looking into this."

Honda rider Simoncelli entered MotoGP for the 2010 season and won his first pole position at the Catalunya race in June this year.

Simoncelli's first podium finish came in the Czech Republic in August when he finished third but he bettered that with a second-place finish at the Australian GP.

World champion Casey Stoner said: "As soon as I saw the footage it just makes you sick inside. Whenever the helmet comes off that's not a good sign."

British MotoGP rider Cal Crutchlow tweeted: "RIP Marco Simoncelli! A great rider and all round nice guy. My thoughts are with all his family & friends. I will never forget today."

Australian Formula 1 driver Mark Webber tweeted: "RIP Marco. A special talent that will be missed. Thinking of your loved ones and all the MotoGP paddock."

Major Italian sports events on Sunday observed a minute's silence in memory of Simoncelli, who was a big fan of football club AC Milan.

In their Serie A fixture against Lecce, Milan wore black armbands and came back from three goals behind to win 4-3.

Not exactly news but a story I read the other day that creeped the shit out of me.

A 57-year-old man living by himself in Japan began to notice small things amiss in his house -- objects wouldn't be where he'd left them. Food would disappear that he swore he didn't remember eating. He'd wake up to strange sounds in the middle of the night, but every time he'd go and check them out, the door would be locked, the windows tightly shut. Nobody was there.

Was he losing his mind? Being messed with by a shy poltergeist? To find out, he set up a series of spy cameras around his house. The next morning, he ran back the footage on the camera and that's when he saw it. A strange woman crawling out of a cupboard like it was the TV in The Ring. And if you think that's terrifying, imagine what happened inside his stomach when, at the end of the video, she crawled back into the cupboard. The one that was just a couple of feet away from where he was standing, watching the video.

Presumably in an effort to maintain bowel control, the man assumed the woman was a burglar who was only temporarily hiding in the cupboard, and had since left. He called the police, who pointed out that all the locks on his doors and windows were undisturbed. There was simply no evidence whatsoever that anybody had broken in -- in other words (cue dramatic strings) the woman had been in the house all along.

After a thorough search, the woman was found nervously huddled in a small cupboard. Apparently she had sneaked into the house and slept, ate and even took showers there for an entire year without being detected. Think of all the things you've done in your most private moments -- the things you thought nobody would ever see. Now imagine a homeless Japanese woman had been watching it all. Yeah. We'll let that one sink in for a moment.
